March Lecture by David Newbould.

In the village of Allerton Bywater lives a remarkably funny gentleman. He beavers away in his attic every day, creating the most wonderful pictures of musicians, old quirky Yorkshire men and scenery from the little corners of God’s own home. David Newbould was asked to give a talk to the Marquetry Group on Wednesday, 16 March 2005 and he entertained us with detailed information about his love life, his comments about Yorkshire folk, the W.I. and the many groups of people that he comes across over his year of producing fine art. We all thought we were in for an artistic evening, learning how to produce a fine piece of art which could be transposed into marquetry. David would have none of it. He didn’t believe in composition, just getting one’s hands dirty and getting on with it, which he did in fine style leaving us all rolling on the floor all evening – with laughter. He drew a picture in pastels of the old Colton mill (near Crossgates in Leeds). Only the windmill part of the picture is still standing but you can see from the picture, it must have been a lovely building. At least it is still being kept alive in David’s talks. Thank you so much to him for talking to us and entertaining us so well.

David is preparing for the Keswick Music Festival this May and is frantically getting an exhibition of his work together. His work will be on display until the end of Spring Bank holiday. Do go along and you will not be disappointed with his smoky bar room pictures of musicians from all eras.
